I seem to have experienced the same problem experienced by many owners of MK4 & 4.5's going by the 59 pages under the Mondeo MK4 section. Tried to start the car this morning to find no reaction to remote or auto unlock, checked second key just in case, same result. So after struggling to remove key from key, then remove cover to access lock.
